The hotel was the dream of the Hon. James. Duthac Carnegie of Alyth, Perthshire for some 10 years.
On the 17th December 1971, taking 2 years to complete, proprietor J. D. Carnegie opened the doors of his long awaited hotel with much pride.
His aim was to take full advantage of the sporting and bird watching facilities at the near by Loch of Strathbeg, a RSPB reserve and where wild fowl shooting was classed as amoungst the best in Britain.
The chosen architect Sir Martyn Beckett, an eminent London architect of Kings College, Cambridge was a family friend of Carnegies.
Sir Martyn Beckett announced receiving great satisfaction in the hotel design. Believing he had made the best use of such wonderful views with such architectural charms as the 180-degree view offered in the hotels Rattray's Lounge and ceiling to floor windows in the Garden Room as well as in the comfortable sitting lounge where a log fire burning waits to greet you.
